From the site:
"Hawaii has become the first [U.S.] state to require solar water heaters in new homes. The bill was signed into law by Governor Linda Lingle, a Republican. It requires the energy-saving systems in homes starting in 2010. It prohibits issuing building permits for single-family homes that do not have solar water heaters. Hawaii relies on imported fossil fuels more than any other state, with about 90 percent of its energy sources coming from foreign countries, according to state data."
Go Hawaii.

India's new plan. If these are in order of importance, I think that they are a little out of order. For instance, energy efficiency is much more effective than solar power. Most surprising and exciting part of this plan is the idea that we should each have an "equal share of the planetary atmospheric space".
From the page: "The eight priority National Missions listed in the National Action Plan include:
1. Solar Energy
2. Enhanced Energy Efficiency
3. Sustainable Habitat
4. Conserving Water
5. Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem
6. A ā€oeGreen India”
7. Sustainable Agriculture
8. Strategic Knowledge Platform for Climate Change
The PM further reinstated Indiaā€s stand on this global issue, in confirmation with the world view by informing that India believes that every citizen of this planet should have an equal share of the planetary atmospheric space and therefore, long-term convergence of per capita GHG emissions was the only equitable basis for a global agreement to tackle climate change."

From the page:"U.S. Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA), Bill Delahunt (D-MA), Jim McDermott (D-WA), and Mike Honda (D-CA) introduced landmark legislation [PDF] on Thursday that will provide security for investments in the renewable-energy sector by guaranteeing rates for renewable-energy generation. This policy mechanism, also known as a national feed-in tariff, may be the single most effective tool to expand renewable energy development that we know of. Feed-in tariffs have been introduced in several U.S. states, but none have the bills have been passed into law."

From the site: "Mazda's newest hydrogen rotary engine will take to public roads in Japan for testing this year. The company says the vehicle is the world's first hydrogen hybrid car with a dual-fuel system, enabling the use of either hydrogen or gasoline."
A very, very small yet expensive bandaid to our oil and transport woes. If the hydrogen is steam-reformed (which it probably will be), this will be even less than a small bandaid only helping carbon emissions slightly and doing nothing to aid our oil dependency. Still it is good to see movement on hydrogen power that could help with hydrogen batteries for renewable energies.

Using Kudzu as a biofuel...
If my (well Ted's actually) research on using cattail's as biofuel is any measure, kudzu might make a good biofuel except for the intense amount of energy that will be eaten by removal and processing the large roots. In addition, tilling up the soil to remove the roots will present an environmental issue. This blog addresses some of that.

From the page: "Sure, it's easy enough for one person to attempt energy self-sufficiency: put a solar panel on your roof, run your car on biodiesel, and you're halfway there. But how easy is it for an entire town to become self-sufficient?
That's the question that Reynolds, Indiana has been trying to answer for the past 3 years. In 2005, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels declared the town to be BioTown, USA's model of energy self-sufficiency for the state."
A cool gesture for a small town and anything that works towards a more sustainable future is helpful.
