Welcome to my blog. I focus on sustainability, appropriate technology and general links that improve the condition of our world. Do you like making the world a better place for everyone? No way... me too. Let's be friends. Appropedia.org rocks!

So cool! Very simple design to reuse your water while encouraging hand washing.

From the site:"In a stunning example of biomimicry, Scottish architecture firm ZM Architecture have come up with a brilliant scheme to provide solar power to the city of Glasgow - and do so in a way that is provocative, creative, and aesthetically appealing. The proposal? To design Solar Lily Pads which will float in Glasgow's River Clyde and soak up the sun's rays, sending electricity to Glasgow's grid while also stimulating urban riverfront activity."

A small, very well designed, net energy producing home in Arcata. Thank you Larry.

Now here is an idea that needs a lot more analysis - generating electricity from traffic.

Mass transit is awesome. This is the top five from environmentalgraffiti... I am surprised that D.F. (Mexico) is not on there - a couple pesos for an extensive, rapid and very easy to navigate (yay for color coding) system. Updated after talking with students: Curitiba, Brazil and Bogotá, Colombia should be on the list as well.

Craziest Green Technologies - Green Technologies

Most of these green technologies are just plain silly*, but a few are quite effective and all are fun and interesting. *Definition of Silly: A design that has a money, carbon and time investment payback of more than 15 years (in a rich country) or 2 years (in a poor country), yet somehow its nifty factor** makes us like it. **Definition of Nifty Factor (and wowee! double embedded definition): The Nifty Factor refers to the often not officially included, but still headed, criterion of Nifty. "Ooo that's cool" often does little for the usability, reduces the maintainability and raises the costs of a project - thereby rendering it silly*. Sometimes this helps marketing, but then Nifty should be explicitly included in your criteria set.

From the site:"The current state of architecture is exciting because sustainable technologies are available, have developed past their nascent stages, and are beginning to converge and synergize with each other. In designing the Clean Technology Tower, Smith and Gill built upon their Pearl River Tower to develop a marvel of biomimicry that takes advantage of site specific sun-rays and air-streams to drive a bevy of power producing dynamos."

LEED certified retrofit residential home. We need to get moving on these. This house is beautiful, and although high in embedded energy (hopefully the fly-ash was from a local power plant), it will buy back that footprint over time. From the site: "Designed by John Lum, this home has everything one could ever ask for in a green home: FSC-certified floors, flyash concrete finished floors, Benjamin Moore low-VOC paints, GE Monogram energy-efficient appliances, a roof garden, rainwater catchment system, small-wind turbine, and a hi-tech resource monitoring system. It should be noted also that the home was designed to generate enough renewable energy to sustain itself, which makes it net zero energy. Nice." Notes on terms: FSC-certified floors Forest Stewardship Council (http://www.fscus.org/) one of the few credible crediting agencies for sustainable wood harvesting. flyash concrete finished floors Flyash is a pozzolan, that can replace some of the cement content in concrete. Every ton of cement produced adds one ton of carbon to the atsmosphere.  Flyash is a byproduct of many industries, most sizably burning based power plants. Benjamin Moore low-VOC paints VOC's are Volatile Organic Compounds. These are what smell toxic when you paint and add to the lower indoor, than outdoor, air quality of many homes. GE Monogram energy-efficient appliances I personal like the Original Sunfrost Refrigerators better. http://www.sunfrost.com a roof garden Roof garden could be a garden on the roof, or an actual living roof that can increase the life of a roof, add thermal mass affected insulation and treat rainwater before catching. http://www.appropedia.org/Living_roof rainwater catchment system Catch and use the water before it becomes stormwater runoff. There are many types of designs. http://www.appropedia.org/Rainwater small-wind turbine Can be usefull, if in a windy enough spot. Usually small home turbines are not very usefull. I hope this one is usefull (and quiet as well). hi-tech resource monitoring system Monitoring devices that show power and energy consumption can greatly raise the efficiency of a home through social engineering. When you can see how much energy is pouring out of an outlet, it is like seeing water from a faucet and thereby easier to keep in check. net zero energy Over the year, a net zero energy home will produce at least as much energy as it consumes. This does not take into account the embedded energy of all the gadgets bought for the project.
